La Liga: It Is Getting Close At The Top

The weekend in Spain saw the title race hot up, with wins, draws and losses for the top four in La Liga.

On Saturday, Real Madrid played out a goalless draw with Real Betis.

On Sunday, Barcelona, Sevilla, and Atlético Madrid all played.

Barcelona won 2-1 away at Villareal. 21-year-old Samuel Chukwueze put Villareal a goal up before Griezmann equalised with a delightful chip over Sergio Asenjo in the Villareal goal. Antoine Griezmann scored his second of the game and the winner in the 35th minute after capitalising on a poor back pass from Juan Foyth.

Sevilla also won 2-1, they beat Granada at home. Sevilla was awarded a penalty after Papu Gómez was fouled by Maxime Gonalons and Ivan Rakitic stepped up sending the ball into the bottom left corner. Papu Gómez was involved once again pulling the ball back for Lucas Ocampos to score Sevilla’s second in the 53rd minute. Late on, Sevilla’s Marcos Acuna had been deemed to have handled Roberto Soldado’s header in the box. Soldado stepped up to take the penalty to pull a goal back for Granada.

Atlético Madrid lost 2-1 against Athletic Club. Álex Berenguer headed Athletic Club in front in the 8th minute. Stefan Savic equalised in the 77th minute heading the ball home from Yannick Carrasco’s corner. Another headed goal, saw Athletic club win late on, with Inigo Martinez rising the highest from a corner to fire the ball past Jan Oblak.

The weekends results leave La Liga extremely close at the top. Three points separate Atlético Madrid at the top and Sevilla in fourth. Real Madrid and Barcelona are both two points behind Atlético Madrid, though Barcelona have a game in hand and will go top if they win that game on Thursday against Granada.
