Frauen-Bundesliga: Matchday seven round-up
Wolfsburg’s incredbible comeback
Both Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt played their part in what was a great advert for the Frauen-Bundesliga.
Lara Prašnikar gave Frankfurt the lead inside four minutes, when she controlled Shekiera Martinez superb cross, before spinning on the ball, and firing it into the bottom corner.
Despite going behind, Wolfsburg looked threatening and had numerous chances to level, most notably Jill Roord missed a gilt-edge opportunity from inside the area. The visitors made their hosts pay for spurning some wonderful chances, when Verena Aschauer’s inviting delivery was guided home by Laura Freigang to register her fifth goal of the season.
On the 34th minute, Dominique Janssen gave her side a lifeline, when her extraordinary long-distance free-kick found the top corner to half the Frankfurt lead. Wolfsburg kept the pressure on, but they were continuously denied by Merle Frohms, with the highlights from the game, resembling a compilation video of the Frankfurt goalkeeper’s best saves. The hosts did eventually manage to restore parity, with a Wolfsburg corner causing chaos in the box, and the ball fell to Roord to fire it home.
In the fourth minute of stoppage time, the turnaround was complete, and unfortunately, it came from Frohm’s first and only mistake of the game. The Frankfurt number one came charging out to claim Felicitas Rauch’s deep free-kick, but she could get nowhere near the ball, instead, she was a mere spectator as Janssen guided her header over Frohm and into the net.

After losing in their last league outing, the reigning champions travelled to SGS Essen and took the lead inside seven minutes, with Klara Bühl’s fierce left-footed effort finding the back of the net. The hosts may have feared the worst after conceding early, but those concerns were unfounded, with Maike Berentzen equalising in the 14th minute to finish off a sweeping counterattack.
The visitors managed to retake the lead early in the second half, when Jovana Damnjanović nodded home Lina Magull’s free-kick and the champions held on to claim all three points to end round seven two points clear at the top.

Usually, derby’s are a cagey affair, but Sunday’s contest was anything but, as those in attendance witnessed a seven-goal thriller. Köln went ahead, when Weronika Zawistowska tapped home, and Mandy Islacker’s header went in off the crossbar to give the visitors a two-goal lead at the break. Moments after halftime Islacker grabbed her second of the game after latching onto Manjou Wilde’s through ball and the away side look destined to be heading to a comfortable victory.
However, Dóra Zeller struck for Bayer Leverkusen, before Milena Nikolić headed home to give the hosts real hope of a comeback.
Although, the home side’s momentum was halted in the 80th minute when Islacker scored from the spot, but Bayer Leverkusen set up a grandstand finish when, Zeller cut inside onto her right foot to unleash a wonderful effort into the top corner. However, despite a nervy finish Köln held on to clinch a memorable derby victory.

Hoffenheim prepared for the Barcelona game, with an impressive 5-1 victory away to Carl Zeiss Jena on Sunday. Nicole Billa netted a brace, with Jule Brand, Anne Fuhner and Vanessa Leimenstoll also getting on the scoresheet.
Werder Bremen moved away from danger after collecting their second league victory of the season, when they faced Sand at the weekend. Michelle Ulbrich scored from the spot in the 83rd minute to steal all three points, and the defeat leaves Sand rock bottom of the Frauen-Bundesliga table.
On Sunday, Turbine Potsdam continued their fine winning run, by picking up their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions, when they hosted Freiburg. Although, it was the visitors who opened the scoring, with Svenja Fölmli finding the net in the 29th minute. Sophie Weidauer restored parity before the interval, and with the game set to finish all square, Melissa Kössler struck in the 90th minute to snatch all three points for the home side.
