UEFA Super Cup Preview
Bayern Munich will face Sevilla in the European Super Cup, which sees the previous season’s Champions League winners face the previous season’s Europa League winners. The Super Cup will be played in Hungary in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.
Bayern Munich come off an opening day 8-0 win over Schalke in the Bundesliga, whereas Sevilla are yet to start their La Liga campaign and will get it under way on Monday against Cadiz.
Super Cup Record
Both sides have won one Super Cup, with Bayern Munich winning in 2013 against Chelsea. The game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes with Franck Ribéry equalising to cancel out Fernando Torres’ opener for the London side. Eden Hazard gave Chelsea the lead in extra-time with Javi Martinez equalising in the final moments of extra time to take the game to penalties. Romelu Lukaku missed to give Bayern Munich the Super Cup.
Bayern Munich have lost on three occasions in 1975, 1976 and in 2001. In 1975, the Super Cup was played over two legs. Bayern Munich lost Dynamo Kyiv, they lost the first leg at home 1-0 and lost away 2-0, which gave Dynamo Kyiv the Super Cup. In 1976, Bayern Munich played Anderlecht and won the first leg 2-1 at home thanks to two goals from Gerd Müller. Anderlecht won the second leg 4-1, which meant they won 5-3 on aggregate. In 2001, Bayern Munich played Liverpool, which was held at the Stade Louis II in Monaco. Liverpool won the game 3-2.
Sevilla have been involved in more European Super Cup’s than Bayern Munich as they have played four Super Cups, with only one of them being successful for the Spanish side. They won the Super Cup in 2006 after they won 3-0 against Barcelona at the Stade Louis II in Monaco. They have lost the Super Cup three times, they lost in 2007 to AC Milan and then lost three Super Cups in a row in 2014, 2015 and in 2016. Real Madrid beat them 2-0 in 2014 and they drew 4-4 in 2015 in normal time against Barcelona with Barcelona winning it in extra time to win 5-4 with Pedro scoring the winning goal. In 2016, they face Real Madrid once again with Sergio Ramos equalising in the last minute in normal time to make it 2-2, and Dani Carvajal gave Real Madrid the win in extra time.
Transfers
The summer has seen Bayern Munich sign Leroy Sane from Manchester City. Alexander Nübel has joined from Schalke and Tanguy Nianzou has signed from Paris Saint-Germain.
Sevilla have seen midfielder Ivan Rakitic re-join the club after leaving the club to join Barcelona six years ago. Óscar has signed for €13.5 million from Real Madrid. Marcos Acuña has signed from Sporting Lisbon.
Team News
Alphonso Davies was an unused sub against Schalke, but that was precautionary, and he is expected to start against Sevilla. David Alaba is likely to miss the game with a muscular injury. Tanguy Nianzou will miss the game with a knee injury.
Rakitic will be in line to make his second debut for the club. Sevilla are likely to have a forward line of Suso, Lucas Ocampos and Luuk De Jong. Sevilla have seen Sergio Reguilón leave after his loan ended and Éver Banega has joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab.

Sevilla and Bayern Munich last played each other in 2018 when they met in the quarter finals of Champions league. The first leg was played at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, which saw Bayern Munich win 2-1. The second leg saw a goalless draw, which meant Bayern Munich won 2-1 on aggregate. Bayern Munich will go into the game as favourites following their treble last season, though Sevilla should not be discounted. Both sides will be looking to get their second European Super Cup.
