Patrik Schick’s Memorable Tournament
Patrik Schick helped guide Czech Republic to the quarter finals of Euro 2020 on Sunday with another goal for his national team. Schick’s goal against Netherlands is another highlight of the tournament for the Bayer Leverkusen man who has managed to score four goals in the tournament outperforming an xG of 2.1.
Schick sealed Czech Republic’s quarter final place when he clinically finished in the 80th minute and earned himself his fourth goal of the tournament. He scored twice against Scotland in their opening group game and then converted a penalty against Croatia before he scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the last sixteen win over Netherlands.
Schick’s goalscoring form has led to him being in potential golden boot contention as he sits one goal behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who is unable to add to his tally after his Portugal side were eliminated by Belgium. Schick has also scored the goal of the tournament so far, with his wonderful goal from the halfway line against Scotland.
He has been a leader in the Czech team. The forward has had the most shot per games of any Czech player with an average of 3.3 shots per game and 7 shots on target, which is five more than any other Czech player.
Schick’s four goals means he is level with Vladimír Šmicer as the second highest Czech scorer in European Championship history. The Bayer Leverkusen player is now just one goal behind Milan Baroš who scored five European Championship goals in Euro 2004.
The story could still have further to run as well. If the Czech Republic can go further, then the tournament could be even more memorable, and Schick could have a real chance of winning the golden boot.
