DFB-Pokal Women’s Final Preview: Eintracht Frankfurt v Vfl Wolfsburg
The final of the Women’s DFB-Pokal will take place today at the RheinEnergieStadion, with the cup’s most successful side Eintracht Frankfurt (formerly 1. FFC Frankfurt) taking on the defending champions of Wolfsburg.
Road to the Final: Eintracht Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt entered the competition in the second round and managed to beat Karlsruher SC 8-0.
In the next round they travelled away to RB Leipzig where they earned a comfortable 4-0 victory.
The quarter finals saw another goal fest when they put seven past SG Andernach to earn a 7-1 win. Swiss forward Géraldine Reuteler scored a brace, while Austrian midfielder Barbara Dunst scored a hattrick. Laura Freigang and Sandrine Mauron were also on the score sheet.
Eintracht Frankfurt played their first home game of the competition in the semi-finals. They faced SC Freiburg, who took the lead in the game in the 13th minute through Marie Müller. Frankfurt equalised two minutes into the second half when Lara Prašnikar poked the ball home from a corner. Frankfurt scored the winner in the 62nd minute when the ball broke to the edge of the box and Camilla Küver side footed the ball past Lena Nuding. Frankfurt advanced to the final via a 2-1 victory.
Road to the Final: Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg won their first game of the competition with an impressive 11-0 victory away to Vfl Bochum.
In the round of 16, Wolfsburg won at home 3-1 against MSV Duisburg.
In the quarter finals there were more goals, with a 7-0 victory over Werder Bremen to seal a semi-final place. Alexandra Popp bagged two goals, while the other five goals coming courtesy of Rebecka Blomqvist, Lena Oberdorf, Svenja Huth, Ewa Pajor and an own goal.
Vfl Wolfsburg faced Bayern Munich at home in the semi-final. Alexandra Popp scored in the 13th minute. A cross from Svenja Huth found its way to the back post when Popp was waiting to guide the ball home with her left foot. In stoppage time of the first half Wolfsburg scored their second. Huth was once again the creator, as she collected the ball on the right side of the box. Huth strode into the box and managed to create space for the cross with some dazzling footwork. The cross found Ewa Pajor, who at the second attempt managed to put the ball into the net.
Head-to-Head
The two games played between the sides this season has seen Wolfsburg win twice. Wolfsburg won 3-0 at home in November, while last week the two sides met, and the game ended 3-2 to Wolfsburg.
